Language proficiency test ("idoneità")

The information on this page applies exclusively to curricular language proficiency tests managed by the Language Centre. For all other curricular language tests (and graded language exams) students should refer to their degree course webpages or directly to the professor in charge of the subject.

All up-to-date details regarding the tests (registration, instructions, test description etc.) are published on the Elly webpage INFORMAZIONI ESAMI IDONEITÀ (see the file with “Essential information in English” at the top of the Elly page).

Only students who have the “idoneità” in their programme of study can view exam dates and register to sit the test through the Esse3 system.

Preparing for the curricular language proficiency test

The Language Centre offers courses taught by native speakers, organised every semester, and online self-study courses which are always available on the Elly portal.

All available language courses are listed on the Curricular courses page of this website.

Recognition of language certificates

Information about the possible exemption from the test by submitting one of the international language certificates recognised by the Language Centre is available on this website, on the page Recognition of language certificates.

F.A.Q.

  • What is a curricular language proficiency test?

The language “idoneità” is a curricular exam (that is, included in the programme of study of a degree course) with a pass/fail result (that is, without mark: the result shown in the transcript of records will be “IDONEO”) which assesses students’ language skills. The assessed language level (B1 or B2) is not chosen by the student but depends on the programme of study of their degree course.

  • What is the difference between a curricular language proficiency test and a language certificate?

The curricular language “idoneità” is not equivalent to a language certificate awarded by an international language test provider. As for the other exams, passing the test will not entitle students to any certificate other than their academic transcript of records, once it is registered on the Esse3 system. Conversely, official language certificates are internationally recognised documents issued by accredited external organisations after passing a standardised test upon payment of a fee.

  • Which document attests the successful completion of the curricular language proficiency test and its corresponding level?

The curricular language proficiency test, once passed, is registered on your academic record: therefore, it is shown in the self-certification downloadable from your Esse3 personal profile, listing all the exams that you have passed. Its level (B1 or B2) is usually included in the exam name or in a default statement that appears in the self-certification document. For further information regarding self-certifications and certificates (that can be requested to the Student Registry Office), please visit the Certificates page on this website.
